What is the best thing about working at Weston General Hospital?
“For me, the best thing about working at Weston General Hospital is being able to work alongside the amazing, hardworking, dedicated individuals that I have the pleasure of calling my team every shift! From Dietitians to Porters , Nursing Assistants to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists to Doctors, Nurses to Housekeeping – I learn something new from them every single day at work… and the fact that we can all have a giggle along the way is a bonus!
Why do you love working and living in Weston?
I love working in Weston General Hospital because it’s small and friendly. Everyone knows everyone and you’ll never walk down the corridor without seeing a smiling face! Every ward that I have worked on – which is nearly all of them – the staff have always been so kind and welcoming. Even when you’re dealing with pressures, like Covid-19, it’s always reassuring to know that no matter how hard the job gets, your team will always be there to lift your spirits and get you through the day (and night).
I don’t actually live in Weston but I live in Yatton which is a small village about 30 minute drive away from the hospital. I love having that time after a shift to de-stress in the car before walking through the door at home. It also means I get to visit and appreciate Weston-super-Mare town when I have spare time!
What would you say is your proudest moment of your career at Weston so far?
That is a really difficult question! I guess for me, I really love teaching our student nurses. Watching a student progress and to see their confidence blossom makes me so proud! I have just signed off a student nurse, Karla, who has been working with us on Berrow ward for three months during her final placement. By the end of the placement Karla could manage a bay of patients without my support and dealt with quite a few challenging situations amazingly well – that was definitely a very proud mentor moment!
Do you have any future aspirations for your time at Weston?
I am currently a band 5 registered nurse working on a Gastro/medical ward. I have only been qualified 16 months, but I hope at some point to progress to band 6. The ultimate goal is to become a specialist nurse but that’s way off into the future! The trouble is that it’s all so interesting to me… right now I would not be able to choose what to specialise in!
What’s your favourite thing to do in Weston in your spare time?
My partner and I love to walk our dog Sophie at Uphill Boat Yard. It’s a stunning walk with great views of Weston and the surrounding area!”
