Pharmacy at UHBW
The UHBW Pharmacy team are integral to everything we do, helping us to deliver the best treatment options for our patients both while they’re staying with us and after they leave.
We support and use clinical trials that use research on a large scale and range. This means our Pharmacy can give patients access to specialised drugs they may not be able to get elsewhere.
Our Pharmacy Department offers training opportunities and gives development support to over 300 staff members based across Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare, with career options from Pharmacy Assistants, through to Consultant Pharmacists.

Our Pharmacy department is known for its range of specialised areas, offering pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy assistants the opportunity to work and develop their expertise in fields that best match their interests and ambitions.
As well as providing opportunities for pharmacy professionals to work within multiple specialist clinical teams such as rheumatology, cardiology and ICU, we are a tertiary centre for a number of areas.

Oncology and Haematology
The Pharmacy service within the Oncology and Haematology departments is a cornerstone of specialised care, supporting patients through complex treatment pathways. Based at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC), the team supports patients through complex chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments, ensuring medications are safe, effective, and tailored to individual needs.
Rheumatology
Our Pharmacy service within the Rheumatology department plays a vital role in managing medications for patients with complex and chronic inflammatory conditions. Rheumatology care often involves long-term therapies that require close monitoring and multidisciplinary collaboration, with pharmacists providing expert guidance on optimising treatment plans and supporting patients throughout their journey.
Cardiology
The Cardiology Pharmacy service plays a critical role in supporting advanced cardiac care provided at the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI), a renowned centre for adult and paediatric cardiology services. The pharmacy team is highly specialised and works closely with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimise medication use in the management of heart conditions.
Paediatrics
Our Paediatric pharmacy service is based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC), one of the UK’s leading children’s hospitals. The service supports a range of clinical specialties, including neonatal intensive care, oncology, cardiology, and general paediatrics.
Maternity
The Pharmacy service in the Maternity Department at is a critical part of the multidisciplinary care team, ensuring the safe and effective use of medications for pregnant and postpartum individuals and their babies. Maternity care requires an understanding of pharmacology, as treatments must consider maternal health, foetal development, and potential risks to the neonate.
Technical Services
We pride ourselves of having a wealth of technical services, including a MHRA licensed production unit and Radiopharmacy department servicing patients both in Bristol and nationwide. This includes preparing sterile medications and bespoke infusions that meet the highest standards of quality, essential for patients undergoing chemotherapy, critical care treatments, or specialist therapies.
Clinical Pharmacy
The Clinical Pharmacy service is integral to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care. Embedded within multidisciplinary teams to support personalised medicine, manage medication safety, and provide patient-specific advice across various specialties, including cardiology, respiratory, oncology, and critical care.
Pharmacy Technician
Pharmacy Technicians
Pharmacy Technicians at UHBW are vital to ensuring the efficient and accurate management of medications throughout the hospital. They work closely with pharmacists and support teams to deliver high-quality care and are integral to both patient safety and streamlined pharmacy operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Medicines management: Conduct medication reviews, support medication reconciliation, and educate patients on their treatments.
- Aseptic services: Participate in the preparation of sterile and aseptic medications, including chemotherapy and IV antibiotics, ensuring adherence to strict safety and quality standards.

- Prescription preparation and labelling: Assist in the preparation of prescriptions, label medications, and package them for distribution to various departments.
- Customer service and patient interaction: Help patients understand the basic usage of their medications and address queries, directing them to pharmacists as needed for further guidance.
- Administrative support: Carry out administrative tasks, manage records, and support the pharmacy team with everyday operations.
